Sky’s the Limit

It started in the 70′s and is reconceptualized 40 years later – “White Trash Uncut” is a work by Christopher Makos, an uncut version of his earlier work “White Trash”. We interviewed Christopher in order to get to know more about his world and to have a glance of the almost disappeared punk attitude.

BETWEEN THE ORIGINAL “WHITE TRASH” PUBLICATION AND THE “UNCUT” VERSION THERE ARE SOME DIFFERENCES. COULD YOU TELL US WHAT’S NEW?

The main difference is 1977, and 2014, long ago and far away. The new uncut version has more of me, in the monograph about the time in cultural/musical/fashion history. It appears people seem to be looking at the book in the context of fashion, and less about music, and more about the history of that moment.

YOU SAW THE DISTINCTIVE ELEMENTS OF PUNK, THE UPS AND DOWNS. HOW IS IT TO BRING THE NIHILISTIC ATTITUDE FROM THE STREETS AND SEE IT BECOME A WORK OF ART, A VALUABLE WHITE TRASH?

Like everything, TIME somehow has a way of maturing, and bringing a sense of respectability to a time, a subject, a way of life. In a way, the 1970’ seem to have a sense of innocence when you consider Miley Cyrus tweaking on stage, and Kim Kardashin giving a blow in a video, and becoming a cover girl on Vogue Magazine.

BEYOND YOUR FRIEND DEBBIE HARRY, WHO IS THE PERSON YOU CHOOSE TO PERSONIFY IN THE STYLE OF “WHITE TRASH” AND THESE TIMES?

I would have to say, artists like MAN RAY and TENNESSEE WILLIAMS. They were true originals, who had their own sense of self, and were keenly aware of the world around them, and had a sense of control of self, and their work.

WE ARE NOW IN 2014; ALMOST 40 YEARS AFTER THE GREAT PUNK PERIOD. WOULD IT BE EASY FOR YOU TO RECOGNIZE A MOVEMENT OF SIMILAR IMPORTANCE TODAY? I MEAN, WORTHY TO BE PHOTOGRAPHED AND PUBLISHED IN A BOOK LIKE “WHITE TRASH UNCUT”?

I don’t really know if there is a movement like what was happening in 1977. It seems that people are so self-absorbed, in their own sense of entitlement, there is no time, nor no necessity for a movement. People have their own personal movements on their twitter accounts, their Instagram accounts, their facebook accounts. Ultimately time will tell, where the next movement comes from.

PEOPLE ALSO KNOW YOU BY THE HILTON BROTHERS, AND YOUR “WORKING SOUL MATE” IS PAUL SOLBERG. HOW MUCH OF THE 70′S IS LEFT ON YOUR WORK TOGETHER?

I think we are all part of Big bang theory, we all come from the same place, maybe different times, but sometimes, people meet, and they realize they speak the same language. When Paul and I met, it was that moment, and understanding each other, and how we could, like my past with Warhol, or my past with Malcom Forbes, speak the same language.

CAN YOU TELL US A BIT MORE ABOUT THE SPIRIT OF THIS COLLABORATION, BETWEEN YOU AND PAUL?

It’s a spirit of reinvention, the spirit of the moment, and understanding about give and take, and how to share our photos in a way that has a dialogue between ourselves, that satisfies that need to communicate, how we feel about the world around us. Its a great moment when we achieve that.
