Piece of Me

I love to shoot women that I admire or if they have a certain quality that I’d love to bring out in an image.

- Millicent Hailes

Millicent is cool! A Barrett & Coe Photography Prize 2013 winner, a Fashion Photography graduate at London College of Fashion and an overall babe. She has a good eye for the female body and her work is very appealing yet revealing, to the right extend. Talking about her pictures, one thing is certain, no matter the size or the shape; she is doing female body a favour. She exposes the beauty and has that extra sultry feel, yet still knowing how to pull back and not cross the line. Her portfolio includes magazines as Vice, Dazed and Confused and also I love You Magazine. We talked about sexuality in photography, her fairly recent trip to Los Angeles and Japan…

MILLICENT, HOW IS EVERYTHING?
Good, thank you.

YOU ARE A PHOTOGRAPHER, DO YOU SEE YOURSELF MORE LIKE A FASHION PHOTOGRAPHER?
I don’t know if there is a need to define that anymore. I think it limits you if you put your work into a box or fall under a certain category.
I think people want to put labels on you to try and understand who you are or what you do better. I guess it’s only natural, I think I let others do that for me. It happens to everyone no matter what you do, it’s exciting to challenge that and create a new idea of yourself every once and a while

WHEN DID YOU START TO WORK AS A PHOTOGRAPHER AND WHAT GOT YOU INTO PHOTOGRAPHY?
Growing up with the internet has enabled me to communicate ideas on a huge scale and pull together references easily. You can discover and learn more at a very rapid pace. By browsing tumblr and art & photography websites it really helped me to figure out that I wanted to really be a photographer and capture my thoughts and feelings through image making.

YOU OFTEN TAKE PICTURES WITH A SEXUAL CONTENT AND LESS DRESSED WOMEN. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE WHAT YOU DO?
I think people are fascinated by the naked body and i’m not really shying away from it.

SEXUALITY IN PHOTOGRAPHY! YOUR TAKE ON THIS TOPIC…
I think it’s fascinating to see the increasing variety of showing beauty and sexuality in current photography, and especially in up and coming photographers work.

WOMEN IN YOUR PICTURES ARE NOT ALWAYS MODELS,HOW DO YOU CHOOSE YOUR WOMEN AND HOW DO YOU DECIDE ON A THEME AND A MOOD FOR A SHOOT WITH THEM?
I love to shoot women that I admire or if they have a certain quality that I’d love to bring out in an image.

WHAT WOULD BE YOUR IDEAL MODEL NOW, DO YOU HAVE ANY SPECIAL WISH ON WHO YOU WANT TO PHOTOGRAPH?
I love shooting strong women.

You just visited Japan and Los Angeles, tell me more…
In LA I shot Amber Rose and Playboy’s Gemma Lee Farrell which was a great experience and I’m currently working on my first solo book which will be published next year so I’ve been shooting a lot for that too.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT JAPAN?
I stayed in the mountains for the first few days of my trip and then moved down to Kyoto, then to Tokyo and Osaka. It’s such a beautiful and inspiring country, it was amazing to make the transition from peacefully drinking tea in a mountain side temple to shooting like crazy in busy Shinjuku in Tokyo.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT LOS ANGELES?
Being in LA made me feel like I was in the Matrix. It’s as if everybody was crazy but nobody knew they were too. But that’s what made it great.

IS THERE ANYTHING YOU REGRET NOT DOING?
I think instead of regretting it’s just about moving on and laughing about those situations instead.

WHAT ABOUT THE FUTURE?
I try not to think too much about the future!

WHEN YOU ARE NOT WORKING, WHAT ARE THE THINGS THAT YOU ENJOY THE MOST?
Researching and thinking about new shoots, meeting new people to work with and planning my next trips away to find inspiring places and people to shoot.
