Piece of Me

THE Asger Carlsen

It’s safe to say that he is one of the best working artist in the world right now, his distinctive and unique style make him stand out. This is Danish born New York based artist, started with photography, made art of it and is now starting to sculpt. He is involving in a household named in an art world, who is much appreciated and just different, he created a look for himself unlike anything outer. Like his art he is far from ordinary in a best way possible, with art like his and the hauntingly imagery he creates and you just know there is something really special about him and the way his brain work, so we talked a bit and here is the outcome..

TRIVIA:

- He’s a runner (he runs every day)
- He has a twin brother.
- He likes to live healthy, green breakfasts and all that
- He was born in 1973, but looks like it was 1983, good genes!
- He is from Copenhagen.
- He likes Los Angeles, it took him some time to like it, but yeah now he does.
- He began taking pics at the age of 16, for a local newspaper.
- He is very happy.
- He is a fan of Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
- His fave project is Hester. Which got a name after the street where he lives in Chinatown, NYC.
- He likes Joe Bradley, Moore Henry and Francis Bacon
- He shoots himself and uses pictures of his body in his art
- As for music, he’s into Alfred Hitchock Vertigo intro at the moment, but things change..

.
His view on…

.

SEXUAL CONTENT
With nudity and sexual connotation, it’s never intentional, it always just happens. It’s not my goal to make my art look in any specific way, let say to sexualise it. That happens somewhere in between, by itself. If we talk about the Hester project… I just wanted to make something that was timeless, that it didn’t have some sort of specific attachment to. Any time era or anything, and it sort of became a pure figure of forms, for me not sexual in any way, but to others…

.

BALLEN/CARLSEN
Basically Vice magazine called me up last year, and wanted me to do something for the upcoming photo issue that they were working on. They had totally different plans of what they wanted me to do, but my suggestion was to make it a collaboration. I personally wanted to make a collaboration, and specifically with Roger Ballen, as I knew he was avare of my work from other sources. I asked, they agreed, he agreed, and I was very pleased with that. We talked a bit on what we wanted to do… Later on I did sent him some pictures and didn’t know until later, that he printed the stuff and made art on the prints, drawings, cut outs… people liked it, and now we have a book coming out and a few shows planned that I’m working on right now….

.

PHOTOGRAPHER/ARTIST
Well, I’m a trained photographer. But I see it way more as an idea than anything else. Because I worked as a photographer for so many years, that was just the obvious reason for me to use that skill. But the whole process, has so little to do with photography..
My work is like a few minutes of photography, what then become many months, even years of work. And that’s because some of the pieces are like 30-40 pictures put together that I shot over the years. But then again, it also get’s to a point where I don’t even know how many things, pictures, objects, are in one piece.

.

ART BASEL
In December I will do a two man presentation with Robert Lazzarini at Art Basel. Our work sort of relates I guess, and we have the same gallery in Germany… So yeah, besides Bellen stuff I’m also making a new project for the Art Basel.

.

AFTER WORK FUN
Ha, after work. Well, I’m a committed runner, I really do run a lot, I run everyday. So I do that just to get out basically. I wake up here in my apartment, and basically have to sit here by myself the whole day.

.

ISOLATION
Hmm.. the isolation part can be hard to deal with sometimes. But I have a love/hate relationship with that topic. I really like it, not be in contact with too many people. I can be for four days without even talking to anyone. There are some Chinese people in my building, but they don’t talk to me, they don’t speak any English, haha. The whole isolation can be a bit of a problem when you go out again, and you have to socialize, and you are kind of in a state of shock, that there are other people around you.

.

MODELS/LOOK
I kind of like quirky looking people. But each model I’ve photographed has a purpose, they all have different qualities, that I can use in lot’s of different ways. And I can also easily make a piece, on a work I already have, some old pics I mean.

 .

WORK
I was always a fan of Francis Bacon and his work. And I wondered how would that look like if I translated that onto photography? A form and a shape of the body. I went to a studio and I did it, that’s sort of how it started.  That’s also based on images I already shot before, so it’s sort of an awareness of pictures and files I have on my computer and in that way I can compose an idea of what I want to do. For me it’s just like looking at other artists, and then again a fascination on a certain form. It could be something totally abstract, something that has just some kind of limbs, and I just work through that form and see that I can do with it. And then sometimes I get tired of it, I find a new inspiration, and so on, so on..
