Piece of Me

As the next step in their expansion on the German market, leading swedish fashion brand Filippa K showed their F/W 14-15 collection for the german and international press in Berlin for the first time. Above their newly opened retail space in Berlin’s Ku’damm the fashion crowd gathered to view an intimate show in a beautiful altbau apartment that is hosting their german office and showroom.  We asked some questions to the designer Nina Bogstedt after the show..

WHAT CREATED YOUR ATTRACTION TOWARDS FASHION?

I have always been attracted to aesthetic areas, not only fashion. My mother works with art and I have always had creativity in my family. I knew early that I wanted to work with something creative and something that influences us in the everyday life. I thought about fashion early, but also interior design and architecture.

WAS THERE A SPECIFIC MOMENT IN YOUR LIFE WHEN YOU REALISED YOU WANTED TO BECOME A DESIGNER?

It grew on me since I was little.

 .

WHEN DID ‘FASHION DESIGNER’ BECOME YOUR PROFESSION?

I started working as an assistant at different fashion companies and after that I started to study fashion design in Copenhagen. So, I have basically worked with fashion my whole professional life.

 .

WAS THERE A TURNING POINT OR A HAPPENING IN YOUR LIFE THAT IS REFLECTED / RECOGNISABLE IN YOUR WAY OF DESIGNING?

Since I have been working with Filippa K for almost 16 years, I have grew into the aesthetics of the brand, which are very similar to my own personal taste; the timelessness, simplicity and elegance.

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO DESCRIBE YOUR SIGNATURE DESIGN?

We have a very sophisticated yet timeless and clean design at Filippa K. I think a lot is in the cuts and details, and in the materials.

 .

HOW MANY RUNWAY SHOWS/PRESENTATIONS HAVE YOU PRODUCED UNTIL TODAY?

Oh, many. We started to present when the fashion week in Stockholm was founded, and that was 2006 I think, and then twice a year. So this will be the 17th show.

 .

WHEN WAS THE POINT WHERE YOUR DESIGN WENT FROM A VISION TO BECOME A PROFITABLE BUSINESS MODEL?

Filippa K started 1993 by Filippa Knutsson, Karin Segerblom and Patrik Kihlborg and the timeless and elegant basics were quite an instant success. But of course we have now grown to be one of Sweden’s leading fashion houses and that has many important ingredients to thank for.

WHY DO YOU CHOOSE TO SHOW IN BERLIN, WHAT IS THE STRATEGIC REASON ?

We recently opened the Filippa K House on Kurfurstendamm, with both a major Flagship store and showrooms areas. It then felt natural to show the collections to an international audience in Berlin.

HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE THE FASHION IN BERLIN IN GENERAL?

I think it is more difficult to narrow down to “one” style in Berlin, than for example in Sweden. I think the diversity in Berlin is one of it’s strength and also one of the things I get inspired by when strolling around on the streets.

 .

WHAT WAS YOUR VISION OF THIS COLLECTION?

The collection is minimalistic yet feminin. Volumes, waists and deep v-necks are combined with the soft, long lengths and oversizes masculine tailoring.

 .

HOW DID THAT VISION CHANGE DURING THE PROCESS?

It is hard to say, we start at a very early stage and then we together, me and the designteam works close in a process and a lot happens during the way.

 .

THE CONCEPT BEHIND THIS COLLECTION IS BEST DESCRIBED AS?

Elegantly wild.

 .

CAN YOU EXPLAIN YOUR CHOICE OF MATERIALS, SHAPES AND COLOURS FOR THIS COLLECTION?

The materials are very delicate, tactile knits are combined with soft silks and heavy tweeds. The colour card is navy, deep burgundy, different whites and chocolate.

WHAT IS THE STRONGEST PIECE/S IN THIS PARTICULAR COLLECTION ?

 We have extremely many great coats.

 .

WHAT WAS THE THOUGHT BEHIND YOUR CHOICE OF OUTFIT FOR TODAY?

 I chose a dress from the F/W 14 collection. It is minimalistic but with interesting details and a sexiness to the deep v-neck.

 .

DO YOU HAVE ANY RITUALS FOR THE DAY OF THE RUNWAY SHOW?

Organized chaos.

 .

WE ARE JUST 2 WEEKS IN TO  2014. WHICH GOALS DID YOU SET FOR THIS YEAR, PROFESSIONALLY AND PERSONALLY?

Professionally to continue the journey that Filippa K is on, we are doing very well and I am looking forward for the next year and all new and exciting challenges that we have. Next, me and the design team will leave for New York and the bi-annual inspirational trip that we do. Personally; to find time to spend with my family.
