FACIAL: FATA MORGANA by Naama Alex Levy

Piece of Me

During my stay in Tel Aviv, I met Naama Alex Levy through a friend from Berlin. We had coffee at a nice café close to Florentin, which is an area you could compare to Brooklyn in NYC or Neukölln in Berlin.

Even though Naama is only just 21 years old, it was very obvious from the beginning that she is one of a kind. Her view on life is not just wise it is unique and that is why her pictures are as good as they are.

One need to be snoopy and patient at the same time to be creative and Naama is.

.

HOW DID YOU START TAKING PICTURES? WAS IS IT A SLOW PROCESS OR SOMETHING LIKE AN EPIPHANY?
My love for photography was always there, years before I actually started doing it. I loved painting, singing, playing instruments, acting, writing. I was mixing, switching and playing around with all types of media as a child.
I looked up on whomever took photos around me (my eldest brother, my cousin and my bff at the time). Then when I was 15 I went on a 10 days trip to Amsterdam with my mom, aunt and cousin. I took my dad’s very basic pocket camera and ended up having too much fun with it! So on one of those days I remember saying to myself

“well, you love and enjoy it so much, why don’t you finally and seriously do it yourself?!?”.

My birthday was coming up so I asked my parents and my grandma to invest in one for me, so I went and got my first DSLR camera, a Canon 350D.

.

WHAT IS THE HARDEST THING ABOUT PHOTOGRAPHY AND WHATS THE GREATEST?
I would say there are countless hard parts in being a photographer, but I will choose to speak about only one: Picking out photos from a shoot; You start by picking out the ones you love best, but then there are still too many, and of course you get emotionally attached to them all.
It’s about letting go and understanding that quality is always more important than quantity – while picking out 5 similar images, each of them reflecting on the other and brings out the more practical and realistic side of all the photographs together. It lowers the general excitement and, even while being nice- it might look pretty mediocre.  Eventually it is best to have just 1 breathtaking frame.
The easiest part is without-a-doubt taking the photos, either it comes naturally or it doesn’t. Although I do think one’s talent and creativity can evolve tremendously through experience..  Why is it so great? too many reasons I best not say a thing.

.

YOU GREW UP IN THE MIDDLE EAST. HOW DID THAT CHANGE YOU AS A PHOTOGRAPHER?
I am sure it somewhat affected my work throughout the years. I can’t exactly put my finger on it. I would have to have a whole interview just about that, and it is a very philosophical question. I’d obviously prefer letting other people decide its meaning and place in my work, subjectively.

.

WHAT DOES THE FEMALE BODY MEAN TO YOU?
The female body is by far the best “object” as a muse for painting, sculpturing , photographing etc.  When I take nude images of female characters I really rather, as opposed to a catalogue shoot, for my model to NOT be too skinny. It is amazing how a strong story is always being delivered between the naked curves of a female form. Clearly it can be much about sexuality but also- motherhood, nature, it is very emotional and very simple in its complexity (and the other way around).

.

DESCRIBE YOUR OLDER SELF. WHO IS NAAMA ALEX LEVY AS A 33 YEAR OLD WOMAN.
My future self would hopefully still be healthy and tight-ass-bodied. Thinking about this age mentally, I very much hope that in looking forward – I’d feel excited and still be soaked with mega-huge ideas, that I would most likely  know how to execute by then.
I learned that a major part of creating, always revolves around being unsatisfied to some degree, therefore I never really wish to sit hand in hand with 100% inner peace and a feeling of utilization (as I fear that by its nature it makes oneself not as creative anymore…).
I would want to have, by that time, an impressive and dreamy studio , located somewhere cool with a great view and with many creative people around. Plus, I’m really aiming towards an international career , travel and work EVERYWHERE.
