BACKSTAGE: Hien Le
The city of Berlin is a city of multicultural societies, artistic mixtures and experiments never seen before. It is the biggest host of youthful expression – but also a city with a space for the more grown-up looking businesswomen and men on their way to the office. Hien Le is designing for both groups, depending on his buyers’ different kind of styling, which is a strong advantage for his brand.
“I think the person who is wearing my clothes is a metropolitan. Likes to travel, good food and easy and simple things in life – enjoying life with a special sense of aesthetic.”
A clear architectural dimension is floating through his collections; also for this one that he calls Like a Dream.
“The song from Francis and the Light called Like a Dream which inspired me to name my collection this. It sometimes feels like a dream that I can do what I want and live my dream – besides all the circumstances of course. But it feels like a big win, that I can do that and doing that now for the 8th season.”
The pieces are literally underlining one’s body’s advantages, like if it was made especially for every customer. Yet have all of his designs tough edges of an elegant touch. Hien Le is a bold designer; he designs his own prints, this time of jellyfish transformed into an inspirational look. This move brings back memories to his SS14 collection that was shaped around the dragonfly as the main inspiration source.
“The main inspiration was the light – art work of artist James Turell. The way how he work with lights and colours were inspiring me for my collection to work more with layers, tone in tone and different fabrics and materials and also transparency. Another inspiration especially for the print was kind of the underwater world. Inspired by fishes and jellyfishes, which we also transform and layered till we get the result we want.”
Once again he reminds us that serious, ambitious and powerful clothing does not have to be tight and sleek to radiate control and confidence – a unique way of designing. He describes his signature design as this: “Reduced to the essence, with lots of love for colours, details and materials, simplicity, quality and style.”
His use of shining, silky fabrics gives the collection a feeling of luxury and ease, yet has the collection an urban spirit in it. Hien Le has created a collection with a colour range from black to white and everything in between, a colour palette that goes from the strongest orange to the softest mint. It is clearly Like a Dream – black for the mysterious and exciting nights, prints for the experimenting.
Transform the vision of Hien Le into your own and live your life to the fullest.
