VIVIANE SASSEN X ACNE S/S 14
Viviane Sassen lenses Acne Studios Spring Summer 2014 collection
For ACNE Spring/Summer 14, the dutch photographer Viviane Sassen has shot a new series of photography for the brand. Sassen is one of the most exciting figures in contemporary fashion photography, known for her innovative and slightly surreal style where she challenges the conventions and expands the boundaries of fashion. She explains her fashion photography to be more extrovert than her other photography rather more introvert.
For ACNE Sassen continues the exploration of the intersection between art and fashion. It is visualised in images dominated by a strong contrast between white and primary colours.
Sassen spent parts of her childhood in Kenya, hence this is visible in her photography. She explains her fashion in the photography rather more as props as the actual piece to be shoot. She places them behind objects, visible but confusing or even disturbing for the viewer.
She studied fashion at the Royal Academy in Arnhem and briefly became a model, working for Viktor & Rolf before she transferred to do a photography degree at Utrecht in 1992. In 2007 Sassen received the Prix de Rome and in 2011 she was awarded the International Center of Photography Infinity Award for Applied and Fashion Photography.
In 2013 Sassen exhibited in the Central Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. In late 2012, the first Vivane Sassen retrospective exhibition was launched at the Huis Marseille museum in Amsterdam and is still touring to new cities.
The best way to experience Sassen’s work is through her photo photobooks. Flamboya merges documentary and fine art to find a new way of looking at Africa, Parasomnia is a more dreamlike exploration of Africa that draws on those childhood memories and vivid dreams. Roxane is a visual journal in time, it’s body and expressions follow the artist’s direction in a sequence of poses and moods collected over a number of years. Etan & Me is a story of love and loss, of Eros and Thanatos. It’s a story about the exploration of the Self and the Other. Are we ever able to truly know someone, to truly know ourselves?
