This is our first part of our series of interesting Russian designers. During our visit to Moscow and Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Russia we explored and spoke to some of the current rising stars in the Russian fashion world. First out: Yasya Minochkina.
I just want to make girls feel good in my clothes.
WHAT CREATED YOUR ATTRACTION TOWARDS FASHION?
My mother is a painter and my father an architect, my grandmother had a clothing atelier, I have always been surrounded by art and fashion. I love these spheres, I enjoyed studying it with my parents and my future profession was an obvious thing for all of us.
WAS THERE A MOMENT IN YOUR LIFE WHEN YOU REALISED YOU WANTED TO BECOME A DESIGNER?
It came near to me when I helped my grandmother in her atelier. At the age of 12 I attended a competition for young designers and I won. The first price was a trip to Paris with a tour of the fashion house of Yves Saint Laurent, afterwards I gave myself a promise; to become a fashion designer!
WHEN DID ‘FASHION DESIGNER’ BECOME YOUR PROFESSION ?
Two years ago when I started my namesake brand in Moscow. Exactly this time, fashion design became my profession and my way of earning money for my living. I’m not only a designer but also the CEO, HR manager, and developer of my own business.
WAS THERE A TURNING POINT OR A HAPPENING IN YOUR LIFE THAT IS REFLECTED OR IS RECOGNIZABLE IN YOUR WAY OF DESIGNING?
I don’t think I have a certain point which reflects my way of designing. I’ve always tried to create fashionable and wearable clothes for every life occasion, I use high quality fabrics, I do something simple but very special, that’s it. I’m not a designer who pushes boundaries of mind, I’m very down-to-earth when it comes to design, I just want to make girls feel good in my clothes.
WHAT IS THE BEST DESCRIPTION TO DESCRIBE YOUR SIGNATURE DESIGN?
Fashionable, wearable and of high quality with attention to every detail, let’s add feminine, sexy and sporty.
HOW MANY RUNWAY SHOWS HAVE YOU PRODUCED UNTIL TODAY?
We did, whoa, 6 runway shows! Not to count our participation in different events like ArtGeorgia, Pitti W and Fashion Scout Paris, to name a few.
WHEN WAS THE POINT WHERE YOUR DESIGN WENT FROM A VISION TO BECOME A PROFITABLE BUSINESS MODEL?
When buyers started to come to the showroom, at the moment we work with Luisa Via Roma and a number of stores in Russia, Ukraine, France, Italy and China and every season we are growing.
WHAT WAS YOUR VISION OF THIS COLLECTION?
It’s a collection for Yasya Minochkina girls in summer: you have some 1970-s inspired suits for office and meetings, crop tops and mini skirts for a rest on beach, midi dresses for cocktails and parties, and you can pair it with hoodies and hooded coats and don’t look to girly.
THE CONCEPT BEHIND THIS COLLECTION IS BEST TO DESCRIBED AS?
To make a good set of clothes for spring and summer time – fashionable and wearable, as always.
CAN YOU EXPLAIN YOUR CHOICE OF MATERIALS, SHAPES AND COLOURS FOR THIS COLLECTION ?
I took 60s and 70s shapes as this decades are very interesting to work with for now. Classic summer fabrics; cotton and silk, and also the signature fabric for my brand; bright neoprene mesh which is both hi tech and sporty.
WHAT IS THE STRONGEST PIECE/S IN THIS PARTICULAR COLLECTION ?
Obviously, new look inspired midi dresses in bright blue mesh, and also in black and white colors. I’m a fan of shiny mini sarafans and coats with hoods.
DO YOU HAVE ANY RITUALS FOR THE DAY OF THE RUNWAY SHOW?
No, I’m very stressed before every show, so I just work work work, as the Iggy Azealia song. The day before a fashion show I normally do yoga and try to go to the spa for couple of hours that’s it!
WHICH GOALS DID YOU SET FOR THIS YEAR, PROFESSIONALLY AND PERSONALLY?
Professionally I want to build a worldwide brand with international offices and presence in the best stores across the globe. Personally I want to help my daughter to become the most intelligent and talented girl in the whole world.
